Eight gorges, measured and put in order

Every gorge below was measured the same way: a straight line across the stream, ground heights from the federal elevation survey every few dozen meters, and the depth read from the lower rim to the floor. The drawing under each picture is that line, all eight at one scale.

Three ways to sleep

A deck, a porch or a room with a key

Inside a canvas tent: a made bed with a wool blanket, a small wood stove and a round rug, the flaps open to a forested gorge

Platform tent

A canvas tent on a raised deck, with a real bed, linen and usually a small stove. You hear the creek at night and walk to a shared bathhouse. The warmest choice in July, the coldest in late October.

A small log cabin with a green metal roof and two chairs on the porch, a stone fire ring and stacked firewood in front

Campground cabin

A one-room timber cabin at a campground resort: beds, a porch, a fire ring outside and often a small kitchen corner. Bathrooms are shared at some resorts and private at others; the quote says which.

An inn room with a quilted bed, an armchair and a pine floor, an arched door open to a balcony above a wooded gorge

Inn room

A room at a small country inn near the gorge, with a private bathroom and breakfast at most of them. The choice for anyone who wants the gorge by day and a door that locks with a key at night.

The three ways to sleep, explained with what each one has and lacks.

The month decides as much as the gorge

Color comes first to the Pennsylvania plateau and last to the lake shores, so the Pine Creek trip is priced for early October and the Ithaca weekend runs into November. Summer suits the lake gorges, where a swim is ten minutes away. Spring is waterfall season everywhere; many campgrounds open only in May, though around Ithaca a few open in April.

Why the list runs by depth

A gorge photograph flattens everything. Two hundred feet of wall and eight hundred feet of wall look much alike on a phone screen, and they are very different places to spend a weekend. Depth tells you how far the trails drop, how long the floor stays in shade, and how much of the sky you see from a deck at the rim.

So the order is a number anyone can check. The deepest, Pine Creek Gorge, is about 800 feet; the shallowest, Fall Creek gorge, about 170. In between, the list mixes famous names and quiet ones, and the price has nothing to do with the position.

Already inside the stay figure

  • Every night of the stay at the campground or inn you choose, for two people
  • The campground's own mandatory charge for linen, cleaning and the first bundle of firewood
  • The office's planning and the written quote, at no cost to you

Added or paid separately

  • State and county taxes on lodging, added by the campground or inn
  • The drive: fuel, tolls and parking
  • Meals, unless the inn includes breakfast, and gorge entry charged at a gate

Evenings at the rim

The picture above is the hour most people remember from a gorge trip: the tents lit from inside, the fire ring going, the far wall losing its color. Many glamping resorts in the region keep a shared fire ring like this one and set quiet hours from ten at night. Fires are the campground's to permit, and in a dry August some of them do not.

Questions about dogs, children, accessible cabins or a wet weekend are answered in the camping trip planning questions.
